Dr. Phillip Wright is the Founder, Managing Director and Chief Analyst of WRT Associates, LLC. WRT Associates delivers thoughtful analysis and actionable information to its clients. WRT Associates’ goal is to project the trajectory of markets and technologies to enable sound business decisions.

Dr. Wright is an experienced technical executive with an extensive background in semiconductor, electronic, optical, display and optoelectronic technology development. He has contributed to several industries including communications, consumer electronics, mobile handsets, information displays, engineering services and defense electronics. Dr. Wright’s background includes roles at start-up and Fortune 500 companies with responsibilities comprising:

As a manager, Dr. Wright has led project teams that were granted more than 50 issued US patents and related foreign filings. He has contributed as an inventor to 16 issued US patents.  A key element of WRT Associate’s client service offerings is intellectual property assessment.  WRT has delivered in depth analysis of individual patents and provided patent portfolio assessment to support client acquisition decisions.  WRT has also provided patent infringement and validity assessments and expert witness opinions.

Beginning in 2002, Dr. Wright served as a consultant to US and European businesses in the areas of market analysis, business development and commercialization of new technologies. In 2007 Dr. Wright founded WRT Associates, LLC to provide a broader range of technical consulting and market analysis services for emerging high technologies.

Since 2007, Dr. Wright served as Consultant and Analyst with the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA). In his work for OIDA, Dr. Wright authored chapters on Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and Wireless Device Applications of Optoelectronics and served as Chief Analyst for the 2007 OIDA Global Optoelectronics Industry Market Report and Forecast. In 2008, Dr. Wright worked with OIDA to organize the program entitled Efficient Lighting, Displays and Renewable Energy – OLED and Solar Trends and Roadmaps for the 2008 Conference on Photonic Applications, Systems and Technologies (PhAST). In 2009, Dr. Wright was Chief Analyst for OIDAs Green Photonics Report and a Member of the Technical Conference Advisory Committee and Technical Program Co-Chair for OPTOmism: Powering the Green Revolution through Photonics.

Also in 2009, Dr. Wright authored two major reports. The first entitled 2009 Green Display Report: The Business Threats and Opportunities of Green Displays, was authored with Ken Werner and published by Insight Media. The second report, entitled The Future of OLEDs for Lighting and Displays: Market and Technology Forecasts to 2014, is published by IntertechPira. In 2010, Dr. Wright assisted OIDA in organizing their Green Photonics Forum. The 2010 Green Photonics Forum addressed solid state lighting, energy efficient displays and solar photovoltaics.

Dr. Wright is a frequent invited speaker and panelist at technical and business conferences worldwide. For example, at Asia OLEDs 2007 in Taipei, Taiwan, Dr. Wright served as a panelist and presented an invited talk on The OIDA OLED Technology Roadmap. He also provided the optoelectronics industry viewpoint on a panel discussion of Emerging and Disruptive Technologies for Future Portable Information Devices at the IEEE Portable 2007 International Conference on Portable Information Devices. More recently, Dr. Wright contributed a presentation entitled Realizing Energy Savings from Lower Power Televisions, to a panel on Key Trends Driving Future Product Development at the 2009 DisplaySearch TV Ecosystem Conference.

In addition to maintaining a busy technical consulting schedule, in 2011, Dr. Wright and WRT Associates have authored a new e-book, as well as a market report, Future Markets for Interactive Displays published by Pira International.  Dr. Wright will also serve as Co-Chair and Speaker for Interactive Displays 2011 (IDC). More than 130 companies participated in IDC 2010.

Dr. Wright is also an Analyst with Insight Media covering input output device technologies, user interface advances, and new mobile device technologies. He contributes editorial content for Insight Media’s Mobile Display Report, Large Display Report and the Display Daily.

Prior to establishing WRT Associates, LLC, Dr. Wright managed display technology development at Motorola. At Motorola he helped establish the Displays Division of the Consumer Systems Group. The Displays Division was formed to market and manufacture low power, high information content displays for portable products such as cell phone handsets and digital cameras.

Prior to his role at Motorola, Dr. Wright was a Founder of Lytel Incorporated, a start-up optoelectronics firm that was subsequently acquired by AMP Inc. At Lytel Dr. Wright was the Director of Process Development and Device Manufacturing.

Dr. Wright began his career in development at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ where he researched and developed laser designs and fabrication processes for high reliability lasers used in the first transatlantic optical communication system.

Dr. Wright received his B.Sc. degree in Engineering from Purdue University, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois.
